Just played the album, his last output was far superior than this. Will pass on this one!!
I listened and wasn't impressed.
There is nothing that stands out or up agasint older material.
100% agree! I honestly don't get why he is so hyped. Granted 'Blinding Lights' was a great song, but he's not doing anything that artists in the synthwave community (and associated genres) haven't been doing for years....and better! He's just fortunate enough to have a commercial platform to get recognition for his work.
If you like what The Weeknd is doing, I strongly recommend checking out artists like 'Le Matos', 'Moonrunner83', 'Gunship', 'NINA' and the likes.
Le Matos tend to do mostly instrumental stuff...their soundtrack to the film 'Turbo Kid' is a highlight. NINA's second album "Synthian" is really strong, but her more recent singles (I'll Wait, Gold Heart) haven't been great , so avoid those. FM-84 is also a good act ('Running In The Night', 'Never Stop') as is French 79 ('Diamond Veins') and Paradis ('Toi et moi', 'Recto verso').
Not saying they are ground-breakingly brilliant by any means, but good melodies that The Weeknd has pilfered and gets all the acclaim for.
